HTUF National Meeting Highlights Expanding Hybrid Business Case

The expanding business case for heavy-duty hybrids will be a key theme of this year’s HTUF National Meeting, October 19-21, 2005 in Toledo, Ohio. The meeting is open to all, especially fleets, manufacturers and suppliers. In particular, rapidly rising fuel costs are bringing the benefits of hybrids into sharp focus because they show the ability to substantially increase fuel efficiency in work trucks.

Hosted by Dana Corporation, one of the nation’s leading automotive and truck suppliers, the national meeting comes at an important moment in hybrid commercialization, and critical progress is being made. Several commercial and military hybrid trucks that have not been previously seen or driven before will be joining us for the ride and drive at Dana's state-of-the-art Technical Resource Park and test track. Look for updated vehicle lists and agenda online at www.htuf.org. Two key roadblocks to hybrid commercialization are showing real progress and will be topics at the national meeting: purchase incentives and hybrid testing standards. Since last year, new tax credits have been made available for medium- and heavy-duty hybrids (see article page previous e-Update). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now assessing what test protocols could effectively quantify hybrid emission benefits. EPA will hold with HTUF a stakeholder meeting on Oct. 19 and provide a briefing on its testing review status Oct. 20.

Combining the latest technical and product briefings, commercialization updates, fleet Working Group meetings and ability to drive the latest hybrid trucks and buses, the 2005 meeting is the must-attend event for trucks users, manufacturers and suppliers. Register today!

EPA Looking at HD Hybrid Testing Protocols - Seeking Industry Input

To help assist the early market launch of medium- and heavy-duty hybrid vehicles, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is beginning to look into what national testing protocols could be put in place to help quantify the emissions benefits of hybrid systems.

EPA, working with HTUF, will hold and take part in a first hybrid industry stakeholder’s meeting on October 19 as part of the HTUF National Meeting in Toledo, Ohio. It will take place at the conference hotel. The stakeholder’s meeting will be structured to collect ideas and comments on what industry and other stakeholders from government, user and other interests would like to see in a testing protocol, and concerns stakeholders have about possible pitfalls to avoid. EPA will also provide a briefing to HTUF National Meeting attendees on its process and timeline for moving forward with a testing protocol.

To take part in the stakeholder meeting on October 19, contact Bill Van Amburg, bvanamburg@weststart.org, or Monica Alcaraz, malcaraz@weststart.org.
