Zero Emission Buses (ZEBs) are buses with all-electric or fuel cell powertrains. ZEBs are operated by transit agencies and other fleets in limited numbers around California, and they are on the cusp of being ready for large-scale deployment.

ZEBs are a great resource for California, because each vehicle removes an average of 10 tons of nitrogen oxides and 1690 tons of greenhouse gas emissions over its lifetime.  ZEBS are also leading the way for zero-emission technologies in heavy trucks by developing commercial large-scale electric drive and energy storage systems.
However, although ZEB technology is improving and costs are coming down, smart policies and incentives are needed to overcome cost barriers at this early stage of the market.

About the CA ZEB Coalition
The California Zero Emissions Bus Coalition (CA ZEB Coalition) advocates for public investments that accelerate commercialization of the zero emissions bus industry. The CA ZEB Coalition helps policymakers understand the benefits of ZEBs, and informs policies and incentives that advance ZEBs in concert with other important low-carbon vehicles.

The CA ZEB Coalition successfully secured the first inclusion of buses in California’s $25M heavy duty ZE pilot program in 2014. Since then, the CA ZEB Coalition has been actively engaged in advocating for investments through the state’s Low Carbon Transportation program, and securing policies needed to deploy 500+ zero emission buses by 2020.

The CA ZEB Coalition is also a hub for dialogue surrounding related ZEB polices, including the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, Advanced Clean Transit Rule, and Public Utility Commission proceedings for commercial vehicle electrification.
