The great promise of hydrogen to provide clean, safe, reliable, and abundant energy is being explored by both government and industry bringing internal combustion engines the commercial market. The Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) is an evolutionary approach to bridge the gap between current propulsion technologies and Hydrogen Fuel Cells as one of the primary power sources for transportation.
CALSTART has compiled for the Federal Transit Administration a compendium of projects that involve these HICE or HCNG-ICE work efforts. An initial strategic planning document has also been developed for the FTA.

As part of these investigations, CALSTART held Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Symposiums in 2006 and 2007. The session topics, the invited speakers and poster sessions bring into focus the information about performance, analysis, accomplishments and future directions in hydrogen internal combustion engine (HICE), HCNG-ICE and related technologies.
Bridging the Transition...Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines
The Symposiums are also intended to foster communication among public agencies as well as the private sector surrounding projects and technology involving internal combustion engines (ICE) fueled by hydrogen or hydrogen blends. Encouraging such dialogue will also help us explore the possible near-term role that HICE and hydrogen-blend fueled ICE might play in the Administration's vision for ‘transition to hydrogen’ as a transportation fuel.
