Cal State LA students are participating in the EcoCAR2 competition, sponsored by the Department of Energy and General Motors, which is a three year, multi-disciplinary engineering competition with 15 universities across North America. Teams, consisting of undergrad and graduate students with concentrations in engineering, communication and business, are given a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and are expected to redesign it into a fully functional plug-in hybrid.

Cal State LA's EcoCAR2 team is the only university representing California in this competition and is starting year three with the title of 2nd Place Overall. In addition, the team was recognized with the Green Leadership award by the LA County Board of Supervisors for its technical and outreach accomplishments. Cal State LA's team is implementing an E-85 engine in conjunction with a Magna electric motor and a 16 kWh battery pack. The team is currently prepping for year three and is aiming to continue to work hard to keep their award winning title.
